Catholic.net Forums – Usage Policies

Catholic.net hopes Users have an enjoyable experience on our forums.

Catholic.net has usage policies meant to guarantee our forums are user-friendly and thought-provoking.

Just like e-mail, phone, and face-to-face interaction online forums also have etiquette code. By agreeing with these policies, you warrant that you will not post offensive content, content in violation of any law, and further that you will fully comply with the following terms and conditions:

1. About Language and Style.

 
1a. User is responsible for reading and accepting Catholic.net Usage Policies prior to registering. Unawareness of its terms will not constitute valid reason for not complying with them.

1b. Modifications to these policies will be made without notification. Users are obligated to read these policies often to keep up with updates.

1c. Users in defiance with these policies will be excluded from Catholic.net Forums immediately and automatically through IP blockage. It is to Catholic.net’s solely discretion to decide what constitutes breaking of these policies.

1d. These policies cannot be subject of discussion on Catholic.net forums. Any suggestions should be directed to Catholic.net management through contact@catholic.net.

1e. It is to Catholic.net’s solely discretion to decide what constitutes breaking of these policies. The forum Moderator is entitled to delete, or edit any post.

1f.Moderators will not answer to questioning or criticism of their decisions. Any concerns regarding moderators’ actions should be addressed to contact@catholic.net.

2. About Users.

 
2a. Catholic.net Forums were conceived as virtual space for Catholic dialog among Catholics. Nonetheless, persons from different religious belief, or without any, are encouraged to participate on the forums destined to Apologetics and Ecumenism.

2b. It is strictly forbidden to use Catholic.net Forums for religious proselytism purposes or to attack the Catholic faith. Likewise, it is expressively prohibited to post links to online content contrary to the Catholic Church. Any offensive or denigrating post against the Church or another user will be removed, and the IP of the author of such post will be blocked immediately and permanently.

2.b.1 “Never Mind Rule”: When coming across an offensive post to the Catholic Church, its doctrine, or its representatives Users are asked NOT to answer to the post, and to report such post through contact@catholic.net immediately. Catholic.net will timely block the author of such post, delete the post, and all answers to it. Hence, Users should not waste their time answering bashers. Likewise, if a rude question is posted, and its author does not come back to carry on the conversation within one week, such question will be deleted and the author’s IP blocked permanently.

2c. Inquiring, questioning, and investigation of Church teaching is always welcome from both baptized Catholics and persons who do not profess the faith given that such questions and conversations are carried on in a respectful manner.

2d. Nicknames are personal and cannot be transferred to another individual. Nicknames shared for more than one user will be taken out of circulation. Nicknames are meant to facilitate communication. Offensive nicknames chosen by Users will not be accepted.

2e. Holy names of God and His Saints, e.g., Holy Trinity, Jesus Christ, Holy Spirit, Son of God, Messiah, Jesus of Nazareth, Virgin Mary, Blessed Mother, etc., will not be used as Users’ nickname. Likewise nicknames citing biblical passages will not be accepted.  Offensive nicknames will be taken out of circulation. If needed, the Moderator will reassign nicknames once. Repeating offenders will have their IP blocked.

2f. It is prohibited to take on someone else’s identity. Proved cases of false identity will be punished by permanent exclusion from forums.

2g. Users are prohibited of acquiring multiple nicknames. If multiple nicknames are recorded from the same IP all of them will be taken out of circulation, and the IP blocked.

2h. Users are forbidden to request or give away personal information such as full name, address, or online identity in other websites.

2i. Users who request personal information from other users will have their IP permanently blocked from Catholic.net.

3. About Forum Topics

 
3a. Catholic.net Forums are intended for Users to express their opinions about spirituality, faith, doctrine, and moral values as they relate to the Christian life within the Church and the larger scope of society.

3b. Political themes are banned, with exception of issues directed related with religion, such as, actions of a Christian politician, the lack of religious freedom in a given governmental regimen, laws in disagreement with Christian moral values, like the right to life, and the dignity of the human person.

3c. Propaganda in favor or against political party or politician is forbidden.

3d. It is prohibited to post hatred messages that express racism, sexism, classicism, xenophobia, or any other type of discrimination such as but not limited to: culture, religion, nationality, and political position.

3e. It is prohibited to start topics with scandalous news about the Church or its representatives. Catholic.net Forums are focused on the good actions found on the Church. We trust that the mainstream media will be eagerly focused on covering the short comes of Church members.

3f. Authors banned by the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith are also banned from Catholic.net. Users who share these authors’ opinion will have to express them as their own by using own words. Quotations of such authors are not accepted on Catholic.net. Catholic.net Forums will not serve as window to spread ideology contrary to Church teaching.

3g. Inclusion of commercial messages, advertising, propaganda, or links to websites not directly related to the post, or to websites contrary to Church doctrine are strictly forbidden.

3h. Users are permitted to make brief quotations from other authors, given that the “fair use” provisions of copyright law is observed, and proper attribution made. To copy and paste large fragments of someone else’s text is forbidden.

3i. It is prohibited to post anything that can be construed as spam, e.g., posting the same message repeatedly, starting several topics with same theme, or sending the same private message to several Users. Abuses will be punished by IP blockage.

3j. Messages that do not address the topic of the forum will be targeted as Off Topic and deleted without notice. Users are encouraged to initiate a new topic instead of deviating from an ongoing conversation.

3k. It is prohibited to post messages that could be considered libelous, defamatory, obscene, pornographic, abusive, harassing or threatening, contains viruses or other contaminating or destructive features. Plagiarism and violation of authorship rights are forbidden. Hence, it is further  prohibited  the post of content (information, data, graphics, text, documents, links, software, or any other material) that violates the rights of third-parties, infringes any copyright, trademark, patent, trade secret or violates any right of privacy or publicity, or otherwise violates any applicable law. It is forbidden the post of any links to any external websites that are obscene or pornographic, dangerous, offensive, or otherwise in contradiction with Church doctrine.

3l. Sexual themes are to be discussed in a responsible, respectful and serious manner. Obscenity, vulgarity, and double-meaning posts are prohibited.

4. About Language and Style.

 
4a. Charity is the golden rule of Catholic.net forums. Hence, all the discussions should be carried on a courteous manner, with patience, kindness, and responsibility. The main goal of posts should be to help others not offend them. Charity ought to be the hallmark of every Christian online as well.

4b. Judgment of persons is forbidden. Catholic.net Forums are meant to be a place for discussion of ideas not of people. Therefore, instead of answering a posting with “you are a liar”, User should adopt “what you posted is a lie, because…” Catholic.net Forums reserve the right to judge persons as God’s prerogative.

4c. It is prohibited to use Catholic.net Forums to criticize, defame, or slander any person, work, movement, organization, government or institution.

4d. The use of courteous language is mandatory. Rudeness, swearing, obscenity and vulgarity are not allowed. Respect for different opinions is a must. Kind dialog is always desirable over hostility.

4e. Personal issues between Users ought to be solved through private messages and cannot be discussed in the forums. Furthermore, it is forbidden to bring up past conflicts or disagreements from other forums to Catholic.net Forums.

4f. Messages in capital letters are forbidden. Besides of being visually unpleasant to readers, this format breaks online etiquette, since it signifies screaming. Users are further encouraged to be direct and concise in their posts, also avoiding extravagant colors, fonts, and emotion icons that obstruct the reading flow.

5. About Catholic.net Use of Forum Posts

Catholic.net respects your right to the privacy of the personal information you provide us with. Therefore, unless you specify otherwise or we state otherwise in this policy or at the time information is collected, any personal information you provide to Catholic.net will be not made known to any third party unless required to do so by court order, law or governmental agency. Catholic.net use of forum posts will be done only upon author approval. Such use will always entail proper citation of author, and respect of author’s privacy.
